As I mentioned in my first post, my wife and I are coming over soon. We have 2 dogs who will eventually make the permanent move over with us. One of my questions is whether we can use the same flea and tick products over there that we use here - Frontline and do dogs over there have to have heartworm preventative? Thanks in advance!

Portugal is a modern European country all of the products that you use will be available here.

However we have 2 dogs and i can tell you from personal experience, Frontline doesn't work very well in Portugal anymore.

We find Stronghold, or even better the collars, available from several producers and lasting 6 months work much better.

The other issue is that prices are very expensive here, so if you're happy with the product you use its probably sensible to bring a years supply with you until you're familiar with local suppliers.

Its not a legal requirement for any treatment other than rabies shots,, but heartworm and leishmaniasis are problems here so its better to look for a product that gives protection from this too.

Again, thanks for the good advice. It's exactly what we were hoping to hear when we initially posted our questions. We do use Frontline over here but we're certainly open to changing product if Frontline doesn't do a good job over there.

Once we have an idea about where we'll settle, posting again to ask about veterinary care seems like a good idea.

I have 2 dogs, medium to long hair on both and they love to run in fields which means we are always on the lookout for ticks. Frontline is working for us so far this year but we had to switch to Pulvex last year as it gave better protection against the flies.
